I took my family to Sea World and we enjoyed the rides and the shows. At the end of the day my 4 year old daughter Faith was getting tired and hungry. We went on one last ride and it seems that Florida law states that their has to be a gift shop at the end of all theme park rides. Faith saw a toy that she had to have and combined with the hunger, sleeplessness and that dreaded word that all kids for all time have come to distain. You know the word all parents know the word. The word is "NO". When I said that word Faith lost her mind! I'm not talking about a hissy fit, or a temper tantrum, I mean she had a volcanic melt down. I had to pick her up and carry her out of Sea World. I put her on my shoulders and walked out as fast as I could as thousands of people could hear us coming and were looking at me as if I was the Grinch himself. The faster I moved the angrier she got at one point she began to slap me in the face. I was gentle and patient with her because I knew she was hungry and tired and would be fine after a nap and some food. She finally calmed down. I knew what she did was inappropriate and I wanted to address her behavior. I told her I didn't like being slapped and she put her arms around me and whispered in my ear I'm sorry. There have been many times that I have not been gentle and patient with my children and I have demanded an apology or told them to say their sorry and they would oblige with a sarcastic I'm sorry. But this sorry was real authentic genuine and I can't help but think that this is what God desires from us not just the words I'm sorry but the attitude of the heart that we are truly sorrowful. God desires to forgive so we can have a fully restored relationship with Him. When Jesus restored Peter He asked him three times if he loved him each time Peter responded yes. Each time Peter responded yes , Jesus told him to feed and care for his church, like a shepherd feed and cares for his sheep. Jesus was not just getting Peter to say I'm sorry for denying you, Jesus was restoring Peter and giving him a ministry. Jesus longs to do the same for us, restore us and give us his work to do and it begins with sorrow but the sorrow will not last it will be replaced with joy. "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." 2 Corinthians 7:10
